Death Angel

Does the human mind works in mysterious ways? Can we really sense something that is about to happen? Do we really hear voices in the night? Can the angel of death fulfill wishes? Some people believe that such things do happen. Are you a believer?

My great-uncle, a World War II veteran, a retired ship yard worker, a true believer in the catholic faith, was dying of cancer. The doctors had sent him home and gave him the option of hospice care. There was nothing they could do because of his old age. His wife had passed away some years prior to cancer. He has been talking to her a lot in the last few days. His final wish he told me was that he did not want to pass away by himself. He just did not want to be alone when the final hour comes.

Six months go by and we are now in the stage of round the clock care, mine is the last shift. I am "doing" laundry at the other end of the house when I hear him call my name in a loud voice, a yell as if he is in need of something. I have heard this sound so many times before, but this time the sound is different somehow.  I step into the hall and start toward his room. My wife is standing in the hall, I say, “quickly, go to uncle’s room.”  As I enter his room, I call his name. Again I call his name and tell him that I am here. Just then, a rattle comes from his chest as the angel of death takes his soul to heaven. I tell my wife that it is a good thing he called my name so loud or he would have died alone. My wife says to me “I just walked out of his room and into the hall, he never said a word.”
